Happy Tuesday!
I, for one, think we are all better for the fact that Dorothy Parker passed this way. I feel the same way about the ones I've decided to write about today: DC Anderson, The Beatles,and Judy Stadt.

DC is a recent returnee to NYC having just wound up a ten year tour as 'Andre' in Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. DC has been with the show over 20 years. He has ten CD's including IN MY ROOM a multi-artist CD in the folk music field that he created/produced last year. Web presence includes www.dcanderson.net.

While on the road DC started taking fellow actor's headshot photos - love photography and has been enjoying it here in NYC. www.lookslikeyouphotography.com.
Every time a casting director is asked what she or he is 'looking for' in an actor's photo, the phrase I hear most often is: 'One that looks like you.'

I like the sound of that. It's what DC does.
DC is based in New York City and shoots on its streets.
He takes whatever time it takes to find the light and then he shoots until you've got great shots and lots of them. He loves photography and it gives him great pleasure to spend time with people who enjoy being in front of a camera. He charges $125.00 for the session. That includes a DVD/CD of all usable shots including 10 'print ready' photos in 8 X 10 format. If you want some other crops, he will happily accommodate.


DC can and will 'photoshop' temporary blemishes, moles (if requested), spinach in your teeth, the stray eyelash etc. but think it valuable to leave the parts of your face that distinguish you as they are.
He desires your photos to look like you.
DC will be singing in Stu Hamstra's upcoming multi-artist concert.
He continues to learn and write and enjoy NYC.

Touring extensively throughout the US and Canada this past 20 years with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA as an actor/singer, DC has taken advantage of any and every opportunity to sing his own collaborations - theaters, concert halls, music clubs…Recording studios are a favorite haunt - resulting in 10 recordings from FOOL MOON through to his recent release CLOSE COMPANIONS(“Bless ‘em – they keep me on the roster through thick and thin!”). D.C’s performing career actually began "on the road" - in the back of the family station wagon where he and his sisters would repeat, from memory, the entire score of THE MUSIC MAN. He often made "personal appearances" - singing the hits of Petula Clark and Gary Lewis and the Playboys while upstairs changing into his PJ’s. The entire family would gather outside his door to listen, anxiously waiting for him to emerge so they could ask him, "Are you all right?"
Undeterred, D.C. studied voice and theatre at Ohio’s Baldwin Wallace College and did graduate work in directing at North Dakota State University. D.C.,or David as he was known at the time, left NDSU to study dance with the BILL EVANS DANCE COMPANY in Seattle, Washington with hopes of becoming a modern dancer...resulting in the ability to add 'moves well' to his theatrical resume.
D.C. Anderson conceived and co-produced (along with Marguerite Pritchard and Dennis Drake) the first Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS holiday benefit CD recording – 1993’s CABARET NOEL: A BROADWAY CARES CHRISTMAS – a 2 CD set featuring 22 premiere recordings of songs by Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Polly Pen, Alan Chapman, Amanda McBroom, Flaherty and Ahrens, Ervin Drake …and 23 holiday standards sung by Brian Stokes Mitchell.

Speaking of Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jumping the Broom, The movie Stokes filmed last year is opened on May 6. It’s a dramedy about the gathering of 2 families - The “uptown” Watsons and the “Downtown” Taylors in preparation for a wedding at the Watson estate in Martha’s Vineyard. Stokes is “Mr. Watson”, the father of the bride opposite Anglela Bassett. This is his second time playing her husband, the first time in 2002 in the Showime movie “Ruby’s Bucket of Blood”. The film also stars Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine and Julie Bowen.
Stokes recently recieved his fifth Drama Desk Nomination for Best Featured actor in a musical for his role as “Ivan” in “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”. Leslie Uggams

Tony and Emmy Award-winning Leslie Uggams recently won an Audelco award for her starring turn in "First Breeze of Summer" at the acclaimed off-Broadway Signature Theater. She recently starred as Lena Horne in a pre-Broadway run of "Stormy Weather" at the Pasadena Playhouse. Ms. Uggams' Broadway appearances have included starring alongside James Earl Jones in "On Golden Pond" and co-starring in the Broadway hit "Thoroughly Modern Millie." In 2001, her Broadway portrayal of Ruby in August Wilson's "King Hedley II" was nominated for a Tony Award. "Headley" followed two other Audelco Award-winning, critically acclaimed, off-Broadway performances: "The Old Settler" and Keb Mo's blues musical "Thunder Knocking on the Door." Karen Akers

Karen Akers, one of America's most arresting and successful concert and cabaret stars, has performed throughout the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. She has appeared in many prestigious venues worldwide from Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, New York's Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, and London's Pizza on the Park. Her career also includes three performances at the White House.

DC produced ‘Fascinatin’ Rhythm’ and ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ - musical revues of Broadway composers in Seattle at the Skid Road Theater and Conservatory Theater Company between 1978 and 1980 featuring Paul Maurice King and Darcy Danielson.
He has produced in excess of 40 benefit concerts for non-profit organizations throughout the US including Los Angeles Theatre Center, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Centerstage… as well as a revue of his original songs ‘Not For the Squeamish’ at Theatre Latte Da in Minneapolis and the Duplex in New York City.
Early concert appearances included being a third of the vocal trio ON THE SLY with Hollis Resnik and Susan Hart in Chicago, and a half of the duo Paul King and David Cameron in Seattle.

On this date in music history, The Beatles had a rare day off on 6 June, but resumed the Roy Orbison tour the following day with a concert at the Odeon Cinema in Glasgow, Scotland. This was The Beatles' first concert in Glasgow. They quickly warmed to the enthusiastic reception from the fans, and always enjoyed their four subsequent visits to the city - three of which were also at the Odeon.

The Beatles performed the same seven-song set throughout the Roy Orbison tour: Some Other Guy, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Love Me Do, From Me To You, Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standing There and Twist And Shout.

The songs from the band’s 13 albums are available for $1.29 per track, $12.99 per album and $19.99 per double-album. The two-volume “Past Masters” collection and the “Red” and “Blue” collections are also available, and, Apple being Apple, iTunes even earned an exclusive out of the deal: the special digital “Beatles Box Set” includes “Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964,” a concert film capturing the Beatles’ first concert in the U.S.

The story of the Beatles is long and complicated but very interesting. Below I hope to give a flavor of what they were about allowing the reader to find out more. Much has been said and written about them and there is no shortage of material should anyone be interested in finding out more.
The most famous and influential band there has ever been.
The Fab Four changed the face not just of popular music and how it is recorded but also were a great influence in the change of popular culture in the 60’s.
The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. They are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music.
From 1962, the group consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways.
The nature of their enormous popularity, which first emerged as "Beatlemania", transformed as their songwriting grew in sophistication. They came to be perceived as the embodiment of ideals of the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.
Initially a five-piece line-up of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe (bass) and Pete Best (drums), they built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960.
Sutcliffe left the group in 1961, and Best was replaced by Starr the following year.
Molded into a professional outfit by their manager, Brian Epstein, their musical potential was enhanced by the creativity of producer George Martin. They achieved mainstream success in the United Kingdom in late 1962, with their first single, "Love Me Do". Gaining international popularity over the course of the next year, they toured extensively until 1966, then retreated to the recording studio until their break-up in 1970. Each then found success in independent musical careers. Lennon was murdered outside his home in New York City in 1980, and Harrison died of cancer in 2001. McCartney and Starr remain active.
During their studio years, they produced what critics consider some of their finest material including the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), widely regarded as a masterpiece.
They are the best-selling band in the history of popular music,and four decades after their break-up, their recordings are still in demand. They have had more number one albums on the UK charts and have held the top spot longer than any other musical act.
According to the RIAA, they have sold more albums in the United States than any other artist.
The Beatles placed number one on Billboard magazine's fiftieth-anniversary list of all-time top Hot 100 artists in 2008.They have received 7 Grammy Awards from the American National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciencesand 15 Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.They were collectively included in Time magazine's compilation of the 20th century's 100 most influential people.
Aged sixteen, John Lennon formed a skiffle group called The Quarrymen, in March 1957.
Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney joined as a guitarist after he and Lennon met that July.
When McCartney in turn invited George Harrison to watch the group the following February, the fourteen-year-old joined as lead guitarist.
By 1960, Lennon's school friends had left the group, he had begun studies at the Liverpool College of Art and the three guitarists were playing rock and roll whenever they could get a drummer.
Lennon's fellow student Stu Sutcliffe joined on bass in January.
Sutcliffe suggested changing the band name to "The Beetles" as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets,and they became "The Beatals" for the first few months of the year.
In May 1960 they undertook a brief tour of Scotland, as backing group for pop singer Johnny Gentle.

After trying other names including "Johnny and the Moondogs",
"Long John and The Beetles" and "The Silver Beatles", the band finally became "The Beatles" in August.[18] The lack of a permanent drummer posed a problem when the group's unofficial manager, Allan Williams, arranged a resident band booking for them in Hamburg, Germany.[19] Before the end of August they auditioned and hired Pete Best,[20] and the five-piece band left for Hamburg four days later, contracted to club owner Bruno Koschmider, for a 48-night residency. "Hamburg in those days did not have rock 'n' roll music clubs. It had strip clubs", says Beatles biographer Philip Norman.
Bruno had the idea of bringing in rock groups to play in various clubs. They had this formula. It was a huge nonstop show, hour after hour, with a lot of people lurching in and the other lot lurching out. And the bands would play all the time to catch the passing traffic. In an American red-light district, they would call it nonstop striptease.
The Beatles were a band formed in the late 1950's that started out playing rock and roll classics but evolved into the most popular pop/rock group of all time. Their recordings have become classics and they have influenced generations of musicians that have followed.

On this date in 1964, during their first ever US tour The Rolling Stones were booed off stage at a gig in San Antonio, Texas. Some performing Monkeys who had been the act on before the Stones were brought back on stage for another performance.


On this date in 1968, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane all appeared for the first of a three night run at the Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, California.

On this date in 1969, Blind Faith made their live debut at a free concert in London's Hyde Park. They were an English blues-rock band that consisted of Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. The band, which was one of the first "super-groups", released their only album, Blind Faith, in August 1969. They were stylistically similar to the bands in which Winwood, Baker, and Clapton had most recently participated, Traffic and Cream.

Andrew Gold, Lonely Boy singer-songwriter, dies aged 59

US singer-songwriter Andrew Gold, who enjoyed hits in the 1970s with Lonely Boy and Never Let Her Slip Away, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 59.

Another of his songs, Thank You for Being a Friend, was known to millions after being used as the theme for long-running sitcom The Golden Girls.

During the 1980s, Gold formed Wax UK with ex-10cc member Graham Gouldman.

His UK label, Dome Records, remembered him as "a hugely talented musician" with "a brilliant sense of humour".

Gold, who died on Friday of a heart attack, was the son of Ernest Gold, Oscar-winning composer of films like Exodus and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

His mother, Marni Nixon, is a singer and actress best known for dubbing the stars of such Hollywood musicals as My Fair Lady and West Side Story.

Gold performed with Linda Ronstadt before his breakthrough as a solo artist with Asylum Records.

He went on to work with Art Garfunkel, Celine Dion, James Taylor, Sir Paul McCartney and numerous other artists.

He loved and connected with her sense of humor, so much that he persuaded his Mother to let him stay up past his bed time to see her when she was on.

Not knowing that many years later he would be on the "red carpet" impersonating her.

Richard recently did the red carpet for Marc Ecko's birthday party and hosted the Gala for the "Stop AIDS" benefit in Cincinnati Ohio as well as the Marriage Equality Oscar Party in NJ.
Most recently he was seen working the red carpet in Atlantic City at Trump Taj Mahal.
He most recently went "Anchors Away"when he hosted and entertained on the Carnival Legend.
He also donates his time to many great causes like raising money for the homeless shelter and soup kitchen in the East Village.
At any given time, Richard will bring a splash of fun and humor to any private or corporate event from Fire Island to LA he'll make you'll feel like a STAR at your next event.

At the age of eight Richard saw Cabaret for the first time and told his mother that he wanted to meet that lady, never imagining that he actually would one day be a Liza Minnelli female impersonator in New York City strutting his stuff as Liza some years later. He totally identifies with Liza Minnelli and when performing brings her electrifying stage personality to life when belting out such numbers as Cabaret, Some People and the show stopping New York, New York
.
When interpreting one of Liza's ballads, Richard possesses a sense of vulnerability that we have learned to identify with her legendary magnetic persona.

Richard got his start at West Chester University where he was a double major studying music and theatre.
But at the same time he was longing to be in the hustle and bustle of New York and wanted to study with the best.
He auditioned at the American Musical And Dramatic Academy.
After he graduated he went on to study acting with Zina Jasper for eighteen years.
At the same time he worked for many years in Musical Theatre, dramas, TV and Film. Twelve years ago Richard put on his first pair of eye lashes when he took the stage as the Legendary Liza Minnelli. Not long after that he started asking people "Who you wearing?"
Since then he has performed to a standing ovation at the 13th Annual Reel Awards at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.

He was featured on the VH1 special “Boys Will Be Girls" which played for many weeks. He also did a commercial for A&E when Liza's Biography aired. Richard entertained at Bette Midler's annual Halloween bash, he received great press in several of New York's major papers for his performance at David Gest's bachelor party, and played at The Tropicana Casino and Resort. Additionally he has performed at various hot spots in New York such as Don't Tell Mamas where he did "The Dueling Diva's Show" with Devon Cass(as Cher), "Liza's Back! With A Vengeance" and threw Liza a 60th Birthday party as well. He's also played such places as FEZ, Danny's Skylight Room, The Cutting Room, Therapy, The Triad, The Duplex, Lips, The Supper Club on Broadway, Barracuda, Splash, Webster Hall and Helens.

Merry Christmas!

Here I am at a very early hour writing my blog on Christmas Day. Danny and Horace and most of the world are still asleep but I'm up and on a high and here at my desk. I had an incredible Christmas Eve. Almost a sold out show and mostly strangers and tourists! I like that! But I also had Joe Franklin, John Tantillo, Florence Ferrare, Barbara Flood, and Joan Jaffee (celebrating her birthday!) among others in the audience! Thank you all!

MAUREEN TAYLOR RETURNS TO THE IGUANA TOMORROW NIGHT!, ALONG WITH LOIS MORTON, DIANA LABLANC...AND THAT'S JUST FOR STARTERS!

Well, another week has passed and we return to The Iguana tomorrow night! Wow, what a line-up! The reservations have been pouring in. Don't be left off. One of my favorite entertainers is kicking off the show tomorrow night. Maureen is one of the greatest gifts I have received performing at The Iguana in the last year and a half. Lois Morton began writing songs in the late sixties, and at the suggestion of Pete Seeger, had several topical songs published in Broadside Magazine. After a long hiatus, which included raising a family, teaching, writing children's books and ESL textbooks, and directing a continuing education program at the YWCA, she returned to songwriting in the mid nineties. She currently focuses on humorous songs of social commentary on subjects such as CLUTTER, CELL PHONES, PSYCHOTHERAPY, et. al., which have delighted audiences at Acoustic Long Island, the Huntington Folk Music Society, and other performance venues. Her song "Confessions of a Clutterholic" received a standing ovation at the National Conference of Professional Organizers.

Diana LeBlanc returns. Diana is in the beginning stages of putting together a tribute show to Angela Lansbury! I can't wait! I don't think it has been done before! Tomorrow night, Diana will be previewing a song from that show.

And of course, there's Dana Lorge!

Warren Schein will be singing at the Iguana on Wed. Sept. 22, can't wait.

Marcus Simeone returns to Metropoliltan Room with his brand new show featuring highlights from his thrilling new album, Haunted, on the Miranda Music label as well as evergreens from the Great American Songbook, As always with Marcus, there will be some very special musical surprises culled from his repertoire of 3000 songs.

After recording over 300 songwriters' demos for major artists (Trisha Yearwood, Reba McIntyre, etc.,) and two live CD's (At Last, Everything Must Change / Miranda,) the new album, Haunted, is Marcus's first full-length studio CD and features memorable – and haunting songs by many of today's most visible and popular songwriters including, John Bucchino, David Friedman, Heather Sullivan, Janis Ian, Stephen Schwartz, and David Zippell among others.

NANCY TIERNEY JOINS US FOR THE FIRST TIME!Nancy is a jazz-centric pop singer who loves to take songs from "back in the day" and kick them up with contemporary jazz arrangements. With this kind of wild mix of songs spanning 15 decades in her creative toolbox, she weaves both song and story into theme-driven musical shows with the intention of entertaining and uplifting anyone within earshot. As a graduate of the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific, Nancy was educated in classical music. She was going to be an opera singer until her first year at college when she discovered how ugly the opera world can be. But the training was invaluable. It taught her how to be a musician, not just a singer. She says, "I fell in love with the art of cabaret because it is the only performance art form I know of that allows the artist so much creative freedom. Anything goes. I can incorporate songs from any genre, pop, classical, jazz, rock, whatever works, A show can be funny, meaningful, inspirational, dramatic or just plain silly! It all has a place in cabaret.
When I'm not creating and producing my own shows, like "In Your Wildest Dreams," "Insomnia," "Love and Lunacy," "Lovin' The Spin I'm In" and "In My Own Voice,” I perform on demand at fund raising events, special musical showcases, and at some pretty nice clubs and cabarets throughout the San Francisco Bay area."

LAUREN ROBERT RETURNS!Lauren Robert is a professional actor, singer, songwriter and playwright. She is a former Epic Records recording artist and her original songs have been produced by Stephen Bray (The Color Purple, Madonna) and Robert Nemiroff (Raisin). Lauren spent years recording and performing on the road at clubs, festivals and on national theatrical tours. For fourteen years Lauren hailed as the lead singer of the wildly popular Louisiana Zydeco-funk band Mojo Hand. Lauren is about to sign with a wonderful literary agent GOTHAM ARTISTS AGENCY...who will be representing Lauren as a writer and performer...with special attention to development of her play .22 CALIBER MOUTH. MARILYN COONEY JOINS US DIRECT FROM SAN FRANCISCO! The following is taken from Marilyn's website: My life began with family sing-alongs, my father on piano and accordion. My love affair with the piano began the moment Dad placed my small fingers in C major position. Many years later, most of the songs on this CD were born on that family upright, which my mother had shipped to me from New York one Christmas.
Growing up near New York City, I was raised on Broadway tunes, but credit also goes to Debussy, Irving Berlin, Motown, The Kingston Trio, and others whose music became part of me. I have always tinkered with words, but at 16, lyrics and music converged when my siblings bought me a pawn shop guitar.
As I sang the works of Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, Carole King, and Laura Nyro, I learned that everyday experiences could become universal songs.
As a high school English teacher for 32 years, I was privileged to help students find their own writing voices, while they showed me the courage of self-expression. In the meantime I attended and led seminars in self-discovery, where I began to write songs. When I retired, my dear husband encouraged my devotion to music. The path led to the San Francisco cabaret community, where I encountered musicians who became friends, mentors and colleagues.
It was Barry Lloyd who faithfully transcribed my songs into lead sheets, tweaking a chord here and there for flavor. He also taught me vocal interpretation and some simple ways to accompany myself. But Barry is the primary pianist on this album, and as you listen, you will know why his solo cabaret shows are acclaimed nationwide.
Songwriting is a mysterious process. Sometimes it seems as if out of nowhere, notes and words come flying, and all I have to do is scribble them down before the moment is lost. Other songs require far more conscious effort, but all are gifts.
I hope that my experiences and observations, collected here in musical form, will speak to you or encourage your own self-expression, for truly,

AND DONATE GOODS TO HELP THE CAUSE!


Last year’s rain almost put the kibosh on the BC/EFA Flea Market, that had to move from West 44th St to Roseland! We HOPE the skies will be clear on September 26th for DO40's fourth foray into Flea Marketdom back in Shubert Alley! They can’t do it without your help! If you’d like to donate items for the DO40 table, and/or your time that day, please call the DO40 Hotline at 212-330-7016 and let them know how you’d like to help. They have a convenient midtown location where you may drop off donated items. They’re asking Volunteers to work the table for a 3-hour slot, between 9:00am and 7:30pm. You may also contact them at dancersover40@aol.com.

They will be selling our fabulous DO40 t-shirts, DVDs, CDs, books, posters and framed memorabilia and of course, the ever favorite Playbills!! Theyhave a framed poster of Michael Bennett’s Ballroom, signed by members of the original cast (including co-choreographer Bob Avian) and a mystery donor who never fails to surprise them with incredible items. Come and meet their Board of Directors, and many, many of the great dancer/members that make DO40 the great organization it has become!
They will be located on the North side of West 44th Street near the Broadhurst Theater (unless they move them from where they were last year! - details have yet to be announced!) But you will be able to spot their great white and blue DANCERS OVER 40 banner from anywhere!

Richard and Dana, thanks so much for inviting us to perform at The Iguana recently. It was an especially smooth and enjoyable evening with wonderful fresh talent among the mix of wonderful familiar guests who are always entertaining. Richard, you were extra "on" that evening and had many of us in stitches. Dana, your song was great and you were gorgeous as usual. I spoke to two sets of new comers at intermission who said you both make people feel so warm and welcome and they plan to return. Kudos to you both. There is no stopping you, and nobody plans on it, so keep it up! We had a blast.
