Happy EASTER , Honoring Carol Channing, Happy birthday to the original Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand!

God partly experiences creation through your soul, and your soul partly experiences creation through your body. -JN, AotS
Happy Easter! If you don't celebrate Easter, celebrate anything today! It's my favorite Holiday!!! Yaaaaay! Hope your day is happy!
(with Patty Gay, Glen Charlow, and Danny yesterday at The Tribeca Film Festival premier of CAROL CHANNING: LARGER THAN LIFE)
The following was sent to me yesterday.
Hello, Jerry!

I have no idea who you are but THANK YOU! You made my day!!
Someone sent me this from "ALL THAT CHAT"
A documentary on "Carol Channing--Larger Than Life" premieres tonight at the Tribeca Film Festival. I'm looking forward to it. I've never seen her "live." The closest I came was seeing Richard Skipper's one-man show about her in December, which I thought was well done; if they give any kind of awards for outstanding one-person play, his show deserves consideration. He not only sang her songs, he answered questions from the audience (in character).

The following article was written by my dear friend Deborah Smith Ford. Thank you, Deborah!

Honoring Carol Channing
Carol Channing, 90, is a singer, actress, and comedienne who is also the recipient of three Tony Awards (including one for lifetime achievement), a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. She will be honored in NYC at a special event (details below).
Channing is best remembered for originating, on Broadway, the musical-comedy roles of bombshell Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and matchmaking widow Dolly Gallagher Levi in Hello, Dolly!

Richard Skipper, a professional tribute artist to Carol Channing, was the associate producer of the 2010 Bistro Awards in association with Sherry Eaker. (Richard Skipper, as Carol Channing, seen here with award winning impressionist Sharon Daniels)
He will be repeating that with this year's Bistro Awards on April 26th, 2011.

Skipper was filmed and interviewed as part of CAROL CHANNING: LARGER THAN LIFE and career of Carol Channing and his close association with her.

The film, Carol Channing: Larger Than Life, opens April 23, 2011 at The Tribeca Film Festival. In February 2011, Richard debuted "To Carol Channing With Love" (now available for booking!) at Blame It On Midnight in Palm Springs. This honored Carol Channing's 90th Birthday and was a benefit for Carol Channing.

More on this special upcoming event as shared by Richard Skipper:
(Carol is seen here with Chief Justice Roberts in 2006)
"I’m very excited, because we are honoring Carol Channing (who is the subject of the documentary, CAROL CHANNING: LARGER THAN LIFE, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival April 23rd.

Tyne Daly, Kevin Dozier, A Special Award will be given to Michael Feinstein for his three-part documentary series “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook,” shown on PBS and now available on DVD, which celebrates and explores the history of the Great American Songbook, and for the other work the Michael Feinstein Foundation does to promote and preserve our musical heritage.

Allan Harris (Ongoing Achievement in Jazz), Carole J. Bufford (Outstanding Vocalist), bring a diversity of musical styles to their singing, and Hilary Kole is accompanied by various celebrated jazz pianists on her CD “You Are There” (Outstanding Recording), The Johnny Rodgers Band has been named Outstanding Musical Group, and guitarist Sean Harkness is being honored as Outstanding Instrumentalist.
Some of the singers and shows honored pay tribute to the past: Anthony Cochran reinvents the Elvis Presley catalogue in “Elvis Lives” (Outstanding Theme Show), while Janice Hall pays homage to Marlene Dietrich in “Grand Illusions: The Music of Marlene Dietrich” (Outstanding Tribute Show).
The Ira Eaker Special Achievement Award, given to an outstanding performer on the rise, and named after Back Stage’s co-founder, co-publisher and first cabaret critic, goes to The Rescignos, brothers Robbie and Paul Rescigno...…so we are talking about major visibility by advertising with us.

The gala event will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at Gotham Comedy Club, 208 West 23rd Street. A Champagne reception for the Bistro recipients and Premium Ticket holders begins at 5 pm, followed by the awards presentation and show starting at 6:30 pm.

Producer Sherry Eaker will be hosting the annual event, along with the other members of the Bistro Awards Committee: Elizabeth Ahlfors (Cabaret Scenes, CurtainUp.com, and BistroAwards.com), David Finkle (Village Voice, The Huffington Post), Rob Lester (Cabaret Scenes, NiteLifeExchange.com), Erv Raible, Executive/Artistic Director of the Cabaret Conference at Yale University, and Roy Sander (BistroAwards.com). Eaker, who heads up the Bistro Committee, is the former longtime Editor-in-Chief of Back Stage and the producer of the event since its inception.

We expect a capacity crowd… hope you can join us as well!

I was very pleased at the response we got from last year’s 76-page COLOR program My goal is to surpass what I achieved last year. I hope that you will be a part of that. I am already excited about what I know will be an incredible keepsake! We are also seeking sponsorship! Ask about sponsorship opportunities!

Once again, the date of the event is Tuesday, April 26, 2011 in New York city. Hope to see you there!" - Richard Skipper

Happy Birthday, Barbra Streisand!Thank you for all the gifts you have given us over the years. I truly LOVE YOU!
For Barbra's official website, go here: http://www.barbrastreisand.com/us/home
Barbra Joan Streisand (pronounced /ˈstraɪsænd/; born April 24, 1942) is an American singer, actress, film producer and director. She has won two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards,a Special Tony Award, an American Film Institute award,a Peabody Award, and is one of the few entertainers who have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award. Happy Birthday, Barbra!

The following is from my friend Josh Ellis who was Carol Channing's publicist during her run of LORELEI on Broadway: You know I don't go to the movies very often. So, while I have yet to see THE KING'S SPEECH, today I did see the new documentary, CAROL CHANNING: LARGER THAN LIFE, part of the Tribeca Film Festival.
Between the interviews with the present-day Channing, video clips that cover the past 62 years, vintage photographs ("Channing Art," as Charles Lowe used to call them), and interviews with many of Channing's friends and fellow theatre artists, we get a very happy musical comedy feast. If you are a Channing fan, it doesn't get better than this. If you are not a Channing fan you've probably stopped reading this review already.
The overriding story is her love affair with Harry, her new husband. They met as young teenagers in San Francisco and went their own way for 70 plus years. After Carol's autobiography was published, they met again and fell in love.

It's up to you to decide if you see the "real" Carol Channing in this documentary. Director Dori Berinstein doesn't shy away from the topic of Charles Lowe, Carol's husband/manager for over 40 years. Debbie Reynolds' comment about the marriage is worth the price of admission. But mostly it's a love-fest created to make you feel good. There is no dark edge, axe to grind or score to settle.
Needless to say, I adored it, as I adore Carol. What it lacks in depth is made up for in glitter.
There are three more Tribeca Film Festival screenings of the film. There is no national distribution set at this time.

A belated Happy New Year...The reviews are in!

"Hell is truth seen too late" -- Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679)

I cannot believe it has been almost a month since my last blog! But, I've been busy opening an off-Broadway show! The good news, the audiences and critics alike love the show! The bad news is that the weather this winter has been brutal and I've been scheduled throughout January on Wednesdays. What do the Wednesday's of January 2011 have in common? A snow storm has hit NY every Wednesday...including another one tomorrow! Here are some pics from my opening night: http://www.theatermania.com/new-york/news/01-2011/photo-flash-john-mcdaniel-julie-wilson-et-al-at-op_33299.html
I forge ahead. It's snowing outside as I write this and it is scheduled to be another messy day tomorrow. My afternoon performance has been canceled! Hope you'll join us tomorrow night. As I move closer to February 2011 and the fast approach of my 50th birthday, I want to encourage everyone to make 2011 about LIVE PERFORMANCE! Since this is my blog, I'll start with my show! Here is the latest: My show will become an open-ended run beginning Jan. 31, which also marks Carol Channing's 90th birthday.

Mark Robert Gordon directs; a portion of the proceeds benefit The Dr. Carol Channing & Harry Kullijian Foundation for The Arts.
The production, celebrates the career and persona of the unique theatrical legend. Accompanied by a three-piece band, I blend Channing's standards with original material and other familiar songs sung in a spot-on Channing-on-Broadway perfection. The musical surveys Channing's life with many stops along the way for my unique — and riotous — 'ad-lib' interactions with the audience.

Starting Jan. 31, performances will be Mondays at 8 PM and Wednesdays at 3 PM. There will be no performance Feb. 14. Additional performances as part of the prior limited engagement include Jan. 19 at 2 PM and Jan. 26 at 2 PM and 8 PM.

St. Luke’s Theatre is located at 306 West 46th Street. Tickets, priced $41.50 to $66.50 (with Premium Seats at $76.50), are available at www.Telecharge.com or by calling (212) 239-6200. For more information visit www.AsCarol.com.
Happy Tuesday!
Our next show is tomorrow night, the 26th at 8PM. I would LOVE to have you in THAT audience. Two potential producers from London are coming in to see the show! What separates me from others who have performed as Carol? I don't make fun of her and it is done with the utmost respect. I even have Carol's endorsement. Every show that I do raises money for Carol Channing's Foundation to the arts. The audiences have loved the show (read my guest book at www.RichardSkipper.com), the critics have loved the show (see below), please help an audience to find us! I would like to offer half priced tickets to you and your friends to come and see the show Wednesday afternoon.
Please call me at 845-365-0720 and I will take care of the details. Get five people to buy tickets and I will offer you two comps!
This is a family show and is a throwback to old fashioned CLEAN entertainment. Some young audiences are discovering Carol Channing through this show! And older audiences are rediscovering her. Call me and let’s talk.
Richard Skipper 845-365-0720, www.RichardSkipper.com or www.AsCarol.com

"Skipper does have -- a gift he shares with the Tony Award-winning legend -- is the ability to simply set a crowd at ease and give them an evening of pure entertainment."
Theatremania

“What makes Skipper's performance so touching and enjoyable - and sustainable for the 90-minute length of his delightful show is that he presents us with a Carol Channing that's toned down to a more personal level. It's no wonder that the Broadway legend herself is one of his biggest fans. It's during Skipper's frequent interactions with the audience where he truly gives us a sense of Channing and her genius for sharp-witted eccentricity. Innocuous exchanges with patrons get whipped into gags throughout the evening.”

The mission of the production, is to present show biz “as it used to be.” Good-natured mock-gentle tilting, lilting and cherished show tunes (with a gifted musical ensemble accompaniment), wrapped-up cabaret history in a cerise sheath dress. Nothing interferes with the painless hark-back to a few decades ago.

"The show is like sitting in Carol Channing's living room as she tells you stories and sings all the songs that she is best known for; it's easy to forget that you are watching an impersonation rather than the real thing."
THE EASYhttp://www.theasy.com/Reviews/richardskipperascarolchanninginconcert.php

"Watching Mr. Skipper embody the spirit of Carol Channing, it is evident no one has captured the true essence of this remarkable iconic performer with such precise and loving care"
Sandi Durrell, TIMES SQUARE CHRONICLES http://t2conline.com/entertainment/theatre/1135-richard-skipper-as-carol-channing-is-the-real-thing (Seen here with Sondra Lee, Hello, Dolly's original Minnie Fay and Donna Hanover)

"Skipper's careful research of theater facts, anecdotes and dishy backstage gossip that he mixes with theater songs and playful, often ad-lib patter...the show is crisply paced to encompass Channing's oversized personality."
Elizabeth Ahlfors, CURTAIN UP
http://www.curtainup.com/richardskipper.html

"It is great fun to sit in a theatre and listen to (and sometimes be invited to sing along with) songs from such Broadway hits as Hello, Dolly!, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, along with a three-piece band and a charming diva. Richard Skipper, a veteran of the cabaret scene, perfectly channels Carol." Ed Malin, nytheatre.com review
http://nytheatre.com/showpage.aspx?s=rich11812

"His spontaneous interactions with his audience was always poised and charming as he delighted the opening night audience with stories and songs that captured the legend’s essence perfectly."
Patrick Christiano, TheatreLife.com
http://theaterlife.com/node/4999

"Richard Skipper has both captured the public persona of the actress and added an appealing overlay of engaging whimsy...it’s as much a house party as it is a show. His dramatic recreation of Dolly Levi’s plea to her dead husband, “Ephram, let me go,” leading into “Before the Parade Passes By,” was extremely moving."
Peter Leavy, CABARET SCENES MAGAZINE
http://cabaretscenes.org/theater/2011/skipper_richard.html

AND the NY POST! "He hooks us from "Hello, Dolly!" on, capturing both Channing's vocal inflections and superb comic timing...his running commentary and improvisations truly capture Channing's wittily deadpan persona. His "Carol" is as warmly engaging as the real thing." Frank Scheck http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/theater/sings_merry_carol_lywc9DWlLLW1ioyqA4cDSJ

I was just knocked out by Richard's Carol concert at St. Lukes (not the St. James)!! I've loved Carol Channing since I was but a lad, and his patter and songs brought it all back.
BRAVO, Richard!!!!
John McDaniel

"Having mounted his very first show "Carol Channing's Broadway" at Don't Tell Mama in Manhattan and, after many years performing as Channing around the country, Richard Skipper, as "Carol Channing" In Concert, is "back where he belongs" lighting up the stage at St. Luke's Theater, also on 46th St. (Restaurant Row) between 8th and 9th, with his razor-sharp tribute of the great, irrepressible Carol Channing. With every diamond studded move, gesture and song in place, Skipper is still growin', still crowin' and still goin' stronger than ever!"
Lynn DIMenna - Cabaret Scenes

What a joy to attend opening night of Richard Skipper's yummy "Carol Channing" show! I had a grand time and Richard truly is a National Treasure!

"Richard! I am awestruck. You are an enormous talent. Your show was so exciting and wonderful. You are so warm, funny, a marvelous singer, a brilliant actor and a master ad libber, you looked the livin' end and you have a true grace. You are so quick and clever and all the time the love within you comes through to us. I love you."

Bravo, Richard! Your show was everything we have come to expect from "your" Carol - warm, witty, worldly, funny, and above all, sublimely entertaining. And that new dress!!
When the lights hit it, you sparkled like the 4th of July! (Editor's note: Gown designed by Steve Epstein)
"Wow, RIchard...a magnificent, polished, effervescent, and commanding performance, and a inspiration & joy to watch your love for the stage. Bravo!! XO"

You and your show were awesome! Caroline Ferenczi, Bayside, NY
I just came back from the Carol Channing Show - or was that the Richard Skipper show - no, wait, it was the Carol Channing Show. Or was that Richard Skipper doing Carol Channing. Well, as far as I am concerned and I think everyone else in the packed- house theatre at St. Luke's, it was Carol Channing.
The dresses, the nuances, the voice, the song, the stories. This was a class act show and Richard Skipper was superb.
I loved every minute of it. A much deserved standing ovation ended a most enjoyable evening. Thank you Richard. It is probably the closest I am ever going to get to seeing Ms. Channing in person.
Wow - what a treat tonight was. Thank you!”

Fantastic performance at ST.Luke's last night.
Richard, you were awesome..
Love, Dana Lorge Sunnyside, Queens

"What a fun time I had last night, Richard!! The whole show was great.! I love your Carol Channing show, and your singing is grand, and so are your quick responses to questions, and by the way, you looked gorgeous!”

Richard, the show was a complete delight. You were a witty, warm and entirely wonderful Carol, and the new dress made you sparkle like the 4th of July. I especially enjoyed "Widow's Weeds", "Bye, Bye Baby" (only a true vaudevillian like yourself could get so much out of a classic "stooge"), and "Before the Parade Passes By". Brava Carol, and Bravo Richard!! Roy Marcus NY

What a wonderful, wonderful evening! Richard Skipper and the stage are certainly a match made in heaven - even Dolly Levi couldn't have come up with anything better. Thank you!! Jim Lahti,
Riverdale, New York

It was my first time seeing Richard Skipper perform as Carol Channing and it was wonderful. I think he does important work reminding us of the talents and value of stars like Carol Channing who we don't see as often in the public eye as we once did. As Carol, Richard was charming and amusing. I especially liked the cell phone bit. Thanks, Richard. You made the evening a delight.
Deardra Shuler, NY

Debbi and I drove 6 1/2 hours to be at the show last night and WE'RE GLAD WE DID! Congratulations, Richard!
David Schaefer, New York, NY

What a wonderful show, Richard! I had a blast! Your enthusiasm for Carol's life and career was totally infectious! Thank you!! XOXOXOXO
"What a WONDERFUL show last night!! You are so talented, well-researched, and dynamic with your audience interaction.
I absolutely LOVED being in the front row!!
What a treat!!!!
xo
Mead"
"Bravo, bravissimo -- an evening filled to the brim with love, joy, and brilliant badinage."
I had a BLAST last night! Your love and respect for Carol and her work was clear from the moment you stepped onto the stage. On the subway this morning, I was listening to the cast recordings of "Lorelei," "Hello, Dolly!" and "Jerry's Girls," but what I really wanted to listen to was a recording of the show you performed last night! Can't wait till the next time!

What a great night. I can't thank you enough for inviting Ruth and I. We saw Carol Channing, not Richard Skipper. You are truly marvelous. It would have been better for her if she had your voice. When things settle down, I'd like to talk to you.
Thanks again for a delightful time.

Richard Skipper is an entertainer extraordinaire that oozes talent, wit and charm to the delight of us all!! He sparkles and SHINES! As Carol Channing or himself he is marvelous and quite simply, sublime! A MUST SEE!!! Brilliant! THANK YOU, Richard!!!

Richard, dahling, you were FABulous last night! We had the best, best time! I always knew you were funny, but last night you showed us all your many talents! Impeccable singing, spot-on comic timing, high-larious audience improv, engaging story-telling - the whole shebang! It was a great night of theatre! Bravo or should I say, Brava Carol!

Richard: Just wanted to say that David Star and I thought your performance at St. Luke's last night was just PHENOMENAL! What a joy it was to watch you. Richard, you are just great! Plus it was so wonderful to see your packed house! To quote a performer friend of mine: You are impeccable!

"Richard!
YOU ARE JUST AMAZING! YOU ARE A DYNAMITE ENTERTAINER!!!
I was honored to sing with you last night....
I truly can''t remember when I've had so much FUN!
THANK YOU!
MarTina "

Dear Richard,
I was so blown away by your performance tonight. Your acting was superb. I knew you were funny and could sing but you made me cry too.
Your talent is HUGE and I'm so glad to have experienced tonights magic. LOVE YOU MADLY!!

What a show! Toward the end, I started to wish you would do the "Ephram" speech, and you DID! It made me cry once again. It gets me EVERY TIME. So moving. I love you.

I was one of the lucky ones to attend Richard's magical performance at St.Lukes on Tuesday evening. It was my very first taste of his glorious talent and one I will never forget. What moved me so, what stirs my heart even as I write this now...was the confluence of two souls meeting in this one character. It is not only that Richard is bringing "Carol" to life...but we are also experiencing the beauty and fine-ness of Richard's equally generous and transcended spirit as well. It is a mystical and perfectly symbiotic portrayal of Carol Channing that I am positive is UNMATCHED anywhere in the world. Because it is not built on artifice and props...but is "channeled" through a depth of character and heart and soul that gives true meaning to the term"it takes one to know one".The evening was unforgettable!

Richard,
Congratulations on your great success Tuesday night. Your performance was a lovely example of true showmanship - funny, warm and completely Carol!
Best,
Peter Napolitano

I can not think of the last time I smiled so much. Richard held us in his hands and in his heart, while teaching and entertaining us the old fashioned way. Carol Channing is so blessed to have this artist pay tribute to her incredible life with such care and integrity. This is a show that should be seen by the world. So many life lessons and good energy to be shared. Thank you, dear Richard. Love, Meg Flather, NYC

Carol Channing in Concert - Starring Richard Skipper
Thursday, July 29, 2010 By Sandi Durell

In a one-night only musical montage at off-Broadway’s St. Luke’s Theatre on Restaurant Row, lovable and talented Richard Skipper (www.richardskipper.com) celebrated the life and times of Carol Channing. (www.CarolChanning.org).
Skipper has been performing as such for a number of years singing not only the familiar Channing standards, but incorporating his distinctive clever ad-libs, along with other material.

As a precursor to the evening, yours truly was at Joe Allen’s restaurant (www.joeallenrestaurant.com) with some friends.
In one of the ladies’ rooms there hung a show poster of the inimitable Ms. Channing as “Lorelei.” I took this as a sign of something special.

The theatre at St. Luke’s was sold out. The audience held its fair share of celebrities present including Celeste Holm, Betsy Palmer, Joe Franklin and songwriter Ervin Drake (www.songwritershalloffame.org/exhibits/C8)with former showgirl wife, Edith. He’s 91, she’s 88.
In a tribute to Mr. Drake, Skipper included one of Drake’s 1967 ditties written for and recorded by Carol Channing, “Widow’s Weeds,” a long story about a lady who’s looking real pretty in her Jefferson City Widow’s Weeds each time another husband bites the dust. There was a buzz and excitement in the air as the evening was being filmed as part of an upcoming documentary based on the life and career of Tony Award winner Carol Channing.
Ms. Channing and Richard had already made a joint appearance at Barnes & Noble at Lincoln Centre in NYC (http://store-locator.barnesandnoble.com/store/2628)to a packed house a few days prior.

The evening opened with Martina Vidmar, who looks a lot like Bernadette Peters, singing ‘The Best of Times” followed by two additional songs. She’s a bit of a screamer and, I must admit, after one song I was anxious to see Carol take the stage. Finally, the elegantly dressed Skipper, in wig, white sparkly brocade and bejeweled gown, large multi-colored rings on every finger, appeared. Skipper captures the essence of the grand lady of theatre in a way that not only embodies her sound, but spirit. Channing has always remarked how thrilled she is to be shown with such love, respect and polish.

Skipper is good on his feet, as they say, with that ability to ad-lib at a moment’s notice, especially so when he’s engaging audience members in what is always a hilarious interchange. Along the way he provides a running history of Carol Channing from growing up in Seattle, Washington, attending Bennington College, weaving in and through her life personally and in theatre. Many of Channing’s best and well-known songs are sung in her incomparably stylized tradition with on-going dialogue of behind the scenes stories.

The highlights included “Elegance,” “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” (as those sparkly rings on Skipper’s hands disappeared to eager audience members), “Jazz Baby,”
and a medley of songs from “Hello Dolly.”

I did wonder about the inclusion of songs not related to Channing in this presentation and the length, without intermission, is nearly 2 hours. However, the show is solid entertainment and laughter that sparkles in more ways than one. There is talk about a potential off-Broadway run. Skipper was ably accompanied by John Fischer on piano, Jeff Carney, bass and Steve Bartosik, percussion.

Richard,
What an outstanding performance.. Your portrayal of Carol Channing was remarkable. Flawless..
Your quick witted and playful remarks with the audience could only be matched by Carol Channing herself.. You worked the room, which was filled by Broadway and Cabaret's finest, with effortless ease...
Thank you, Richard. I feel as though I finally got to see Carol Channing live in concert!!

HERE'S WHAT AUDIENCES ARE SAYING ABOUT MY WORK (TAKEN FROM MY GUESTBOOK AT WWW.RICHARDSKIPPER.COM

Great evening last night at BARNES & NOBLE LINCOLN SQUARE (7/23/10)with you, Carol Channing and Harry Kullijian. You did a marvelous job as moderator and kept the questions flowing and allowed Harry to talk about his and Carol's work to promote the arts in schools. It was a very enjoyable evening and enjoyed your work at the event. Paul, NY

Dear Richard,
You were a perfect host for Carol Channing's event this evening. Jim and I brought two friends with us and they thought you were warm and respectful! You have a true skill and you're always thinking of others. For example, you moved your chair back so people on the side could see better and everyone was appreciative. Thank you also for introducing us to Harry. He was a joy to talk to as well as an inspiration. I'm so glad we were able to make it. And we are so glad to know you. YOU need your own talk show!!!
Sincerely,
Mary Lahti, NY

Hi Richard....unfortunately, I'm down in Atlanta, but I've seen you a few times in FL (Jimmy Ferraro/Dee Etta's theatre, and the Palladium in St. Pete). You are AWESOMELY INCREDIBLE!! Anyone who hasn't seen you, NEEDS to go, because they'd be in for a wonderful treat! Maybe if you ever get down here to the Atlanta area, I'd definitely see your show again!
